Both the lyrical work and the life of the German-speaking poet of Jewish-Rumanian descent — its tragic span from his youth in Nazi-occupied Czernowitz to his suicide in 1970 in Paris — have become topoi of much recent critical activity. No postwar German- speaking poet has been at the heart of so many discussions about the stance of modern poetry and poetics, has spurred on so many critical debates, as Paul Celan has, — debates, moreover, that go well beyond the boundaries of the German linguistic community. In the wake of these international discussions, Celan's poetry has come to be read as a u-topian kind of meta-poetry, one that reflects on its own impossibility, on the flight of meaning in a world that has produced the Holocaust.
Yet, though it is true that the production of essays and studies on the poet has been prolific, it is at the same time noteworthy that his work has given rise to a number of serious controversies and that the secondary literature has been marked by profound interpretative divergences. The crucial role of Paul Celan in postwar literature is widely recognized among European scholars, but has been addressed only scarcely in the Anglo-American academy. In Word Traces, Aris Fioretos attempts to redress that imbalance, bringing together thirteen expert readers in the most extensive English-language critical collection on Celan yet published.
The volume begins with the first complete English translation of Jacques Derrida’s book-length essay, “Schibboleth for Paul Celan.” Chapters by Otto Pöggeler, Dennis J.
