  • CLEVELAND HUNGARIANS WHO SERVED IN THE U.S. MILITARY 1950-today

ByCleveland Hungarian MuseumonFebruary 24, 2015inCleveland Hungarians

    COLD WAR TO WARM COOPERATION

Multiple generations of Hungarian-Americans from Cleveland have served in the United States military since 1950. Some were born in the Cleveland area, some immigrated here, some have since moved away, and some have died, but all served their newfound or native country with dignity. Many were drafted, but many volunteered; most served and then returned to civilian life, yet many made long careers of sacrifice and honor, and most still have ties to Cleveland’s Hungarian community. Ten made the ultimate sacrifice, dying on the battlefields of Vietnam. The list includes branches of service where it differs from the Army (where most served), and first names are spelled with Hungarian spelling for consistency’s sake, although individuals often use one spelling in Hungarian and another spelling in American circles. The list was compiled by Endre Szentkiralyi, a native Clevelander.
