When the shocking news about the death of Doreen Ncube reached me last week, I was devastated. Nothing can describe the sadness and anguish I felt for such a loss of life and talent. Doreen Ncube died on March 29 in London. She had been ill for some time.
Who is Doreen Ncube? Some of you might ask? Very few people born after independence know her, but trust me, she had an incredible voice.
To me, Doreen is one of Zimbabwe’s most important music icons whose death is as devastating as the deaths of those who went before her such as Prince Tendai, Andy Brown and Tongai Moyo.
Well, I first met Doreen in 1983 when I was doing a video for one of my hit songs “We Are One Family” (“Hello Brothers, Hello Sisters”).
She was working with The Pied Pipers band then. We teamed up to do my next video for the song “Stop Your Crying”, which was screened non-stop for six months on ZBC’s Sounds on Saturday programme presented by the late Josh Makawa and John Matinde.
I remember Josh whispering to me then: “Hey, that’s a gorgeous lady. Where did you find her? I wouldn’t mind becoming a musician for her sake.”
Indeed, Doreen was quite

My twins Tadiwanashe and Tapiwanashe have continued to pin me down seeking some “convincing explanation” as to why the late Leonard Dembo was not accorded a hero status “if he was indeed better than Soul Jah Love who was declared a hero”. I always tell them that the concept of heroism in our Zimbabwean context has remained subjective and at most, controversial. That for another day! At least my wife, Angela Zvipo has always defended my stance on Dembo-because Angie was the “Chitekete, the Sharai, the Gire, the Ziviso, the Ruva Rashe and the Paw Paw” of the late 80s into 90s before she became Mai Two in the early 2000s. Thus, she has the energy and authority to defend the Dembo legacy, fighting from my corner.
Today, the 9th of April 2021, marks 25 years after the demise of my own hero, Leonard Dembo. The man influenced my entire life even in his death. It all started when I was in grade three, in 1987 when my now late uncle Piraishe Mike Mpfuwambwa introduced me to the Dembo and Chibadura music. Those days Dembo’s “Nhamo Moto”, “Kuziva Mbuya Huudzwa” and “Sharai” albums were rocking the airwaves. My uncle would play these tunes each time he was back from the Mozambique operation where, he was part of the regiment that was helping t
