Horatio Gates Spafford (1828-1888)was a wealthy Chicago businessman and lawyer, married with five children and living in Chicago in 1870. when his son, Horatio Spafford Jr., contracted scarlet fever and died. The next year, a massive fire devasted the city on October 8-10,1871. The fire killed almost 300 people and destroyed the homes of around 100,000.
